John Thorpe, MA, AMFT # 153499
Supervised by Abeer Othman, LMFT #51401
At A Place to Turn, we are honored to welcome John Thorpe, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, to our clinical team. John brings a grounded, straightforward, and deeply human approach to therapy, creating a space where authenticity and connection lead the way toward healing and growth.
Before becoming a therapist, John spent over 30 years in film production, an experience that sharpened his ear for story and strengthened his appreciation for collaboration. These qualities shape his sessions, which stay practical, creative, and real—rooted in curiosity and open dialogue rather than labels or judgment.
John works with couples who feel stuck in repetitive arguments, adults managing anxiety, burnout, or identity transitions, and teens navigating academic stress and the challenges of a tech-driven world. His approach is collaborative and non-pathologizing, helping clients uncover patterns, rebuild trust in themselves and others, and find clarity in the midst of life’s pressures.
John earned his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and his Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from The New School. When he’s not in session, John enjoys sailing, exploring the California coast, and chauffeuring his kids around Los Angeles—where many great conversations still happen in the car.
